CHARITABLE GIVING & YOUR BRAIN

Pleasure is a central motivator in our lives; after all. If we didn’t find things like food and water pleasurable or rewarding, we wouldn’t survive and pass our genetics to the next generation.

One set of studies was conducted by William Harbaugh, a professor of economics, at the University of Oregon, and his colleagues. The goal of their study was to figure out how the brain's pleasure circuit responded to differing approaches to giving and paying taxes.

We find great satisfaction in giving back to the world around us. Many of us are far more privileged than others, and when we become aware of that, we often have an innate desire to help the less fortunate.

Winston Churchill once said We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give”.
