Suddenly Single

A divorce or a death is an emotional toll. Sadly, each can be a financial toll. Managing that transition could mean crossing a lot of things off your financial check list, at a time your least prepared to deal with it. For you, the earth just stood still, and a thick fog has come in.

The positive side is that many of those big decisions can wait, and some should wait. As a LPL financial advisor, I caution against making irreversible financial moves until the fog clears out and you can breathe. Emotion can cloud your judgement. Acting on emotion or to quickly can leave you vulnerable to bad advice.  Even though many financial decisions or tasks can wait, I stress that waiting too long to tackle some decisions can be detrimental also. I like to train my suddenly single to say to others giving financial advice or sales, “That’s an interesting idea.  I am not making decisions right now, when I am ready my advisor and I will discuss this.”
